Getting Started: Your First Claude Conversation
Step 1: Create Your Account
- Go to claude.ai
- Click Sign up
- Enter your email address and create a password (or sign in with Google)
- Verify your email if prompted
You're in. You'll land on the main chat interface.
Understanding the Interface
The Claude interface is intentionally simple:
- The big text box at the bottom — this is where you type your messages
- The conversation area — where Claude's responses appear
- New chat button — starts a fresh conversation (Claude won't remember previous chats)
- Projects (left sidebar) — a way to organize related conversations and give Claude persistent context
For now, just focus on the text box. Everything else can wait.
Your First Conversation
Type something — anything. If you're not sure what to say, try this:
"Hi Claude! I'm just getting started. Can you tell me one interesting fact and then ask me a question to get to know me?"
Hit Enter (or click the Send button).
Notice a few things:
- Claude responds almost immediately
- The response feels natural, like a person wrote it
- Claude actually asked you a question back — it's designed to be conversational
How Conversations Work
A Claude conversation is a thread. Every message you send, and every response Claude gives, is part of the same thread. Claude can see everything that was said earlier in the thread.
This means:
- You can refer back to things you said earlier: "Based on what I told you about my company..."
- You can ask Claude to refine its previous answer: "That's good, but make it shorter"
- You can correct Claude: "Actually, the deadline is Friday not Thursday"
Each new chat starts completely fresh. Claude will have no memory of your previous conversations unless you paste in context or use a Project (we'll cover that in Module 2).
The Free Plan vs. Claude Pro
Free plan (claude.ai/free):
- Access to Claude (usually a slightly less capable version)
- Limited number of messages per day
- No access to Claude Code
Claude Pro (~$25/month):
- Access to the most powerful Claude models
- Higher usage limits
- Access to Claude Code — which is essential for Days 3–7 of this course
For the first two days, the free plan is fine. Before Module 3, you'll want to upgrade to Pro (or check if your company has an Enterprise plan).
Practical Tips for Your First Sessions
Tip 1: Don't start over — refine
When Claude gives you something that's almost right but not quite, don't delete the conversation and start over. Instead, tell it what to change:
"Good, but I need this to be more casual — I'm writing to a friend, not a client."
Tip 2: Ask it to explain itself
If you don't understand why Claude gave a certain answer, ask:
"Why did you suggest that approach rather than [other approach]?"
Tip 3: Give it a role
You can get better results by telling Claude to adopt a specific perspective:
"You are a marketing expert. Review this email subject line and suggest three alternatives that would get higher open rates."
Tip 4: Paste in content
Claude can work with text you give it. Copy-paste an email, a document, a spreadsheet, or even an error message and ask Claude to help:
"Here's an email I received. Can you summarize the key asks and draft a response?"
What Happens When Claude Is Wrong?
It will happen. Claude sometimes:
- States incorrect facts confidently
- Misunderstands what you're asking
- Gives an answer that doesn't fit your actual situation
The fix is simple: correct it.
"That's not right — our company was founded in 2019, not 2021. Can you redo that section?"
Claude will accept corrections gracefully and update its response. This back-and-forth is normal and expected. It's part of the workflow.
